What is Conformity?
How does conforming or not conforming affect us and our society?
A problem-based learning unit
for Sophomore English
by Martha Lewellen
Introduction: As a society we are driven by the ideas of the
majority. Every once in a while a creative individual, group, idea,
or event comes along that changes the majority.
What are the advantages and disadvantages of conforming to society's
expectations? Why do people conform? What standards are they
conforming to? What happens to non-conformists?
Assignment: Students were expected to answer the above
questions and present their findings to the rest of the class. This
was a Sophomore level composition class. This assignment related
directly to the curriculum by requiring students to read, research, write,
and present information.
