Reflections

What went well?

  • Driving question "What Makes the Good Life for You" was appropriate for the students.
  • Investigation topic evolved from the literature.
  • Focus was narrowed early to King Arthur.
  • Ample background information (through reading, worksheets, videos, and other activities) prepared students to investigate the driving question.
  • During collection, organization, analysis, and interpretation of data, students learned from one another.
  • Students enjoyed learning PowerPoint while creating artifacts.
  • The follow-up activity, "Life After High School," was taken seriously by the students.
  • Students enjoyed the change of pace of problem-based learning.
  • The scaffolding was timely and appropriate.

What would we do differently next time?

  • Because students have a tendency to "waste time," next time we would have them keep a daily journal on their progress throughout their independent research.
  • Next time we would have students write annotated bibliographies of the sources they used, which would help them be more selective in their use of sources.
  • We would spend more time on follow-up activities.

What advice do we have for other teachers?

  • Students will have different abilities with technology, so be patient.
  • Students should see guidelines and rubrics at the beginning of each project/activity because they know what you expect of them.
  • Activities should be tied to the standards.
  • The teacher should emphasize content.
  • Students should be given lots of class time to work.
