Reflections on 2000-2001 Project

Things that went well:

  • Overall, the unit went very smoothly and it was well planned out.
  • All nine of the teachers on our team bought into this project, which was essential to this project being successful.
  • Our driving question was relevant to our students lives, which contributed  to their high interest in the unit.
  • The belief statement activity generated a lot of discussion and was a good springboard into the research phase of the project.  The zoo field trip also peaked their interest and allow us to begin the unit with positive motivation.
  • We gave our students more guidance than perhaps a "true PBL".  We felt this was essential to the success of the project.
  • It allowed our students to think independently, with the teacher as the facilitator and the student as the active learner.
  • This project reinforces cooperative group learning.

Ways to improve:

  • Students had trouble organizing all their information.  Next year we will incorporate the use of index cards and outlines.
  • Students need additional practice in internet research skills, and evaluation of internet resources.
  • One problem we encountered was that the student in charge of keeping the research folder was sometimes absent, and thus students did not have access to their information while preparing their presentations. We will have all students save their work to a disk that will be placed in the folder.  This folder. Next year we may require that the folders are left in the classroom.
  • We also found some presentations were strictly informative instead of persuasive in manner.  Next year we will emphasize the persuasive aspect by having students vote on which presentation as the most persuasive.
  • We have considered homogeneous groups next year to ease the burden on the higher achieving students.
  • We have discussed the need to come together as a team and grade a couple projects together to ensure consistency in using the rubric.
  • We have considered posting our students' grades on our server in order to more easily share our students' grades with our entire team.
