INVESTIGATIONS           picture of detective

Technology

  • I expect students to explore which shapes and materials are strongest, and perhaps compare the use of different shapes and or materials in model structures.  I expect perhaps testing various materials for strength of different kinds.
  • We plan to use laptops for research into strength and forces. We will use digital cameras to archive our investigations.  We may use excel to chart results, and each group will prepare a power-point presentation to show the results of their investigation
  • Classroom management could be a problem, but Technology teachers are generally pretty comfortable with organized chaos. I have a large lab area and I plan to split the groups up to different areas of the room.  Machines are also available, as is internet access in this lab.  After students decide on how to proceed,  I will simply be there to help them, and answer questions as they come up.

Other activities

As a preliminary activity, Students will view videotapes on construction, and bridges.  they will also be assigned some in class reading with 2 worksheets that cover the reading.  They will see 1 slideshow over construction in general, and 1 that will be a build-up to the investigation activity.  They will also do a short exercise with the Bridge Builder program.

Physical Education

I want my students to examine different workouts and try to determine which ones are the most effective in increasing a persons strength in a particular area.  These investigations can be done from the Internet pages provided and the related links, but are not limited only to these sources.

  • Is doing 3 sets of 10 repetitions on the bench press at 80% of 1RM 3 times per week enough to increase the muscular strength of your pectoral muscles?
  • Does running 3 miles per day, 5 days a week at a 7-minute per mile pace, decrease your resting heart rate?

I want my students to use the information they have acquired to develop a personalized fitness program for themselves that will increase their strength in a particular area.  Upon completion of this plan, I would like to them to present their finding along with an outline of their fitness program and how it will be evaluated for its effectiveness using a PowerPoint presentation.

I will introduce this activity the 3rd week of the second semester and will begin viewing presentations the 15th week.  The 17th week of the semester, we will present our programs to the 8th grade industrial technology students.  My students will be given 2 class days per week to conduct their research and for the development of their programs. We will have access to lab carts, weightlifting equipment, and the gymnasium for each of these class periods.
