CURRICULAR OBJECTIVES

Technology

  • Students will be able to list and describe common structural shapes
          triangle      square      circle
  • Students will be able to define strength
  • Students will be able to define the forces that act on structures
  • Students will design a structure and perform a simulation test of its strength
  • Students will design, build and test a structure.
  • Students will be able to determine the role played by forces and shapes in the strength of their structure.                                                              arch

This project will mesh perfectly with my current curriculum, and add to it the element of learning about shapes and forces.  This approach also relates very closely to the state guidelines for middle school technology, specifically the unit on construction.  These guidelines also generally approve of a problem solving approach, and recommend many alternative projects for the unit that are problem based in nature.  For this reason, the problem-centered investigation should work very well in the context of state guidelines.

Physical Education

  • Students will learn how different exercises affect their strength and overall physical  fitness.
  • Students will learn how the frequency of exercise (times per week) will affect their strength and overall physical fitness.
  • Students will learn how the frequency of exercise (times per exercise session) will affect their strength and overall physical fitness.
  • Students will learn how the intensity of their exercise will affect their strength and overall physical fitness.
  • Students will create a personal fitness program that reflects what they have discovered in their investigations  related to strength.

This project relates to several Indiana Physical Education Standards.

  1. Recognition of the importance of regular physical activity.
  2. Discovery of activities that will enhance their physical well-being.
  3. Assess their own fitness levels when developing their personal fitness plan.
  4. Participation in activities outlined in their personal fitness plans.
