Investigations and Activities
- Students will use a variety of
methods to collect data, both at school and at home.
Prior to beginning the unit, the
students will take a survey to see what they know about diet and
exercise. The survey will ask them questions about what a good diet
contains, how many times a week a person should exercise, and also what
they think key terms like overweight and obesity mean. We will also
ask students about possible side effects of living an unhealthy lifestyle.
The time frame of the unit will be
three weeks going across all disciplines and working on the unit daily in
class. The science classes will focus on the effects of living a
healthy versus unhealthy lifestyle. The social studies classes will
focus on the cultural views of diet and healthy lifestyles. Math
classes will focus on reading nutritional labels and calculating caloric
intake in an ideal setting. Language Arts classes will focus on
research and keeping a journal recording the student's feelings as they
learn more about a healthy diet and lifestyle.
Surveys will be taken of students in
other grade levels about their thinking dealing with a healthy diet and
lifestyle. Using the data from the survey, students will begin to
formulate a definition of diet. They will also graph responses from
the survey during math. They will then begin to explore key
components of a healthy lifestyle and it's effects. Part
of the unit will also be visiting the National
Institute for Fitness and Sport in Indianapolis. Here, students
will be exposed to key components of exercise science and the role that
exercise plays in many people's lives on a daily basis. At
the end of the unit, students will create a PowerPoint presentation
offering their recommendation to the question proposed at the
beginning. These will be presented in class, and some will be
selected to be presented to the administration. |
