Rationale

Our solar system contains nine planets that revolve around the sun.  Currently Earth is the only planet that can sustain life.  The planets are separated into two groups-inner planets and outer planets.  These are defined in the glossary of terms.
Factors Needed to Sustain Life
Earth has the perfect conditions to sustain life.  These conditions include liquid water, a suitable temperature range that stays constant, and an atmosphere that gives us a mixture of gases to breathe in, burns up most meteoroids that come close to Earth, as well as absorbs harmful radiation from space.
Inner Planets
The four planets that are closest to the sun are called the terrestrial planets, or inner planets.  Mercury, Venus, Earth, and Mars are all smaller planets that have rocky surfaces.

Mars
Outer Planets
Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto are called the outer planets because they are the farthest from the sun.  The first four outer planets are called gas giants because they do not have solid surfaces.
