What is the Life Skills classroom?

The Life Skills class is made up of students with Moderate to Severe Disabilities, these students show limitations in communication, social skills, and taking care of him or herself.  This class has many different skill areas that are addressed such as: social interactions, domestic skills, pre-vocational and vocational skills, as well as daily living skills.  Students with moderate to severe disabilities have IQs of 50 or below, with 100 being an average IQ. 

Although some students may be able to live independently, most will require assisted living and supervised work areas throughout their life. 

How could a tutor help in this class?

• Provide the students with positive social interactions.
• Get to know the students.  Treat them as your peers.
• Read directions to students and repeat to individual students if necessary.
• Assist student with activities while in therapeutic equipment.
• Maintain a positive attitude and encourage the students to do their best.
• Role model appropriate behaviors and attitudes.
• Be flexible. Although routine is an important part of Life Skills activities, adaptations may need to be made.
• Assist students in vocational activities.
• Never expect too little of the student.
• Always acknowledge student outside the classroom.
