Curriculum Objectives

Learner Objectives:

  • To have students use the various components of language in both English and Spanish. (i.e. conversation, reading, writing, comprehension, etc.).
  • To have students learn the various skills needed to propose, plan, write, produce, and edit an educational film.
  • To have students produce and provide an information kit (to accompany film) that assists local employers in working with English and non-English speaking employees.
  • To have students present the film and additional information to all members of the community.

Indiana State English Proficiency (ELP) Standards:

  • Language minority students will listen, speak, and read to convey knowledge of words, word relationships, concepts, and the reading process (8.1.6, 8.1.7, & 8.1.8).
  • Language minority students will listen, speak, read, and write for information and understanding (8.2.9, 8.2.11).
  • Language minority students will listen, speak, read, and write to express themselves and convey information and interpretation to a target audience (8.4.11, 8.4.13, 8.4.14, 8.4.15).

ELP Standards Continued:

  • Language minority students will listen, speak, and write for varied purposes and audiences with different genres and styles (8.5.11, 8.5.15, 8.5.16, 8.5.17)
  • Language minority students will listen, speak, and write to negotiate, construct, and produce English language conventions (8.6.9, 8.6.10, 8.6.11, 8.6.12, 8.6.13).
  • Language minority students will listen and speak for specific purposes to negotiate and express meaning (8.7.12, 8.7.13, 8.7.14).

Note: All ELP standards will be expected in Spanish as well.

Project Description:

To have students make a movie, and supplemental materials to correspond with the film (in English and Spanish). The “educational kit” will then be given and/or presented to local community agencies, schools, local factories, and businesses.

Project Calendar / Timeline

Second Trimester (Nov.15, 2004 – Feb. 18, 2005)

-- Week 1: Introduction, brainstorming, developing plan for both the video and packet.

-- Week 2 – Week 5: script and packet development and writing.

-- Week 6 – Week 9: Filming

--- Week 10 – Week 11: Editing and Finalizing

Includes assessments on rough draft, oral presentation, content, originality, and workload.
