How does music effect teenage behavior?

This problem-based unit will help students research music lyrics, analyze music, and look at student behavior and how it is affected by music.

State Music Standards covered:

  • Demonstrate knowledge of meter, rhythm, tonality, and simple harmonic progressions.
  • Discuss the vocal qualities commonly heard in singers, such as use of vibrato, tone quality, or use of breath while singing.
Identify common elements of rhythm, dynamics, tone color in several musical examples from various cultures.

Identify the historical period during which musical works being studied were written.

8.83 Discuss the characteristics that represent music of different types, styles, and cultures.

Discuss the uses of music and the roles of musicians within our culture and other world cultures

National Educational Technology Standards covered:

  • Exhibit legal and ethical behaviors when using information and technology, and discuss consequences of misuse.
  • Apply productivity/multimedia tools and peripherals to support personal productivity, group collaboration, and learning throughout the curriculum.
  • Design, develop, publish, and present products using technology resources that demonstrate and communicate curriculum concepts to audiences inside and outside the classroom.
  • Select and use appropriate tools and technology resources to accomplish a variety of tasks and solve problems.
  • Research and evaluate the accuracy, relevance, appropriateness, comprehensiveness, and bias of electronic information sources concerning real-world problems.

Project Calendar Timeline

Day 1 Present question and discuss topic

Day 2 Break into groups (3) and do first brainstorming session

Day 3 Bring in music, listen, and discuss. (all six selections)

Day 4 Continue listening to six selections.

Day 5 Continue listening to six selections.

Day 6 Make final selection of one song to analyze.

Day 7 Bring in cd of song and listen to it several times.

Day 8 Write out lyrics and begin discussing feelings and emotions it conveys to listeners.

Day 9 Continue with discussion of feelings list.

Day 10 Search web and research link of music lyrics and teenage behavior.

Day 11 Continue research.

Day 12 Take your song and lyrics and research if there is any link of different behavior with your selection.

Day 13 Discuss how your song might affect student’s behavior.

Day 14 Begin one of the following: PowerPoint, poster, or digital camera presentation

Day 15 Continue working on  presentation

Day 16-19 Presentations.

Day 20 Entire group vote on the song that had the most influence on you with its lyrics and music.

Assessment

What your presentation should include (50 points)

Decide what kind of presentation you are doing.

Present audio to listen to song and lyrics written for all to see.

Share feelings and mood this song portrays.

Share findings about how song relates to possible teenage behavior.
