Introduction

This WebQuest was created as part of EDCI 591W, Educational Applications of the WWW, at Purdue University.

Learners

This WebQuest is designed for students in special education with assistance from a peer facilitator.  It incorporates lessons for Science and Social Studies at an elementary level (K-3).  

Standards

This WebQuest addresses the Indiana State Standards

     Writing:

1.6.1 Print legibly and space letters, words, and sentences appropriately.

1.6.2 Write in complete sentences.

1.6.6 Correctly use periods, exclamation points, and question marks at the end of sentences.

1.6.7 Capitalize the first word of a sentence, names of people, and the pronoun I. 

3.4.4 Use various reference materials (Online resources).

     Listening and Speaking:

1.7.1 Listen attentively.

1.7.2 Ask questions for clarification and understanding.

2.7.6 Speak clearly and at an appropriate pace for the type of communication.

     Science:

2.4.4 Recognize and explain that living things are found almost everywhere in the world and that there are somewhat different kinds in different places.

     Geography:

3.3.2 Identify the continents and oceans.

Process

Begin by reading the steps you will need to follow to complete each activity on the following birds:  Canary-Europe; Toucan-South America; Peacock-Asia; Bald Eagle-North America; Emu-Australia; Secretary Bird-Africa; and Penguin-Antarctica.

 Activity 1:

  First, you’ll be put into groups assigned by the teacher.

  Then your teacher will give you an activity sheet. There are five questions you and your partner  will need to answer on the activity sheet.

 You will be able to find the answers to the activity sheet questions by clicking on the links next to the picture of your bird below.

 You will need to read through the information together. When you know the answers to your questions write a complete answer, use capital letters and periods.

 When you have finished your activity sheet, turn it in to your teacher and she will give you another one. You will do this until all seven of your birds have been identified.

Activity 2:

  Look over the following websites and choose the two you would like to color. Be sure to color them using the information you got from the websites above. Be neat and stay inside the lines.  

Activity 3:

  Click on the following website. Read all the jokes and pick two of your favorite jokes to tell the  class.  

Activity 4:

  Go to the following website and follow the directions to color the picture. Raise your hand when you are finished so the teacher can see your work.

Conclusion

This WebQuest is designed to provide information to students studying birds within a Science lesson, and reinforce knowledge of continents and their locations.
