Introduction

This WebQuest was created as part of EDCI 591W, Educational Applications of the WWW, at Purdue University.

Learners

This WebQuest is designed for grade 7&8 physical education classes using heart rate monitors and the World Wide Web as learning tools.

Standards

This WebQuest addresses the Indiana Academic Standards for Physical Education for:

  • Select and participate in activities that will build their repertoire of lifetime activities.
  • Seek out and participate in new activities not previously tried.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the concepts of health-related (healthy lifestyle) fitness and applies these concepts in various physical activities.
  • Participate in a personal health-related (healthy lifestyle) fitness program.

Process

1)  Find your resting heart rate (your pulse at rest).  Follow these instructions to learn how to determine your resting heart rate.

  • Take your heart rate first thing when waking up in the morning before getting out of  bed.
  • Take your heart rate by using the first and second fingers of your hand to find a pulse at your neck.  This is your carotid pulse. Do not use your thumb.
  • Count the number of beats for one minute.  This is your resting heart rate.

2)  Find your maximum heart rate = 220 - your age.

3)  Find your heart rate reserve = maximum heart rate - resting heart rate

4)  Now that you have your heart rate reserve, calculate your  training heart rate.

5)  Select two activities in which you can participate to reach your training heart rate.  Fitness walking, football, basketball, aerobics, jump rope, treadmill, stair climbing, stationary bike, running, tennis, swimming, rollerblading, soccer.

  • Click on the web sites listed below to find information about the activities you would like to participate in using the heart rate monitors on activity day in P.E.
  • Look for movement activities, games and drills in the web sites that you can use to reach your training heart rate.
  • Write a three paragraph description of the activities you have chosen.

6)  Wearing your heart rate monitor, participate in the two aerobic activities you have selected on two separate activity days in P.E. class.

7)  Record the results of each activity and determine which activity is best at keeping you within your training heart rate.

Conclusion

The goal of this WebQuest is to give our P.E. students the opportunity to use heart rate monitors to see firsthand the benefits of different activities and their effects on cardiovascular fitness.  Students should also be able to take with them some new knowledge by integrating computer use with math, health and fitness.

Suggestions

1)  Print out the student components of the project for the students.

2)  Hold class discussions to discuss information or any problems or issues that may arise about the project.

3)  Have the students research and find their own websites when selecting activities in which to participate.
