In my Tech class, this activity is part of a larger unit called An Introduction to Technology. In this unit students learn what technology is, and the five areas of technology;  Communication, Construction, Biotechnology, Manufacturing &  Transportation. This activity is the MAIN EVENT for the unit, and it's purpose is to reinforce the 5 areas of technology, and to show students that technology comes in many forms, not just computers. Hopefully, they will learn that technology has been created since man has existed on earth. It is also my hope that will begin to see  HOW & WHY technology was invented. Basically it is all problem solving, right?

Learners:  This unit has been designed as part of a 6th grade Technology class at Tuttle Middle School. The students are both male and female ages 11-13.

Standards: The state of Indiana does not have any official standards for Technology, but this unit fits in well with the state endorsed Technology curriculum for middle school courses 9-18 weeks in length.

Introduction  All I want here is for the students to get a sense of what they will be doing for the next 2 weeks, and to realize that the web-activity, is not the end result. They will actually be USING the web as a tool, not just surfing. They will be collecting information, thinking about it, and then using it in a slideshow.

Task  This is where the objectives are spelled out.  Mainly I want the students to THINK about inventions, not just find out who invented it and when. When they find an invention for a certain category, they need to think about why it was invented and what is used for. Problem solving again, right?

Process This just the nuts and bolts and instructions. This is the page they will go back to because it has all of the links. It also explains to them what they are looking for. It may be good idea to create some kind of a Word document for them to use to record information. Mine is just a table where they can list the inventions, with spaces to write in the who, when, what, and why about each one.

Evaluation It's self explanatory. I'm not big on evaluation, but am very big on participation. All teachers evaluate differently, my evaluations are pretty lenient to most people. I really want the slide show to indicate that they have given thought to the What it's used for, and Why was it invented aspect of the activity.

Conclusion This section explains the slide show in detail, and I always try to drive home the point, that the show must have a theme, even if it is very simple, and all of the questions need to be addressed.
