Process

1. Select a partner with whom you wish to work.
2. With your partner, select 2-3 poets to study
from the following list.
Dickinson
Frost
Poe
Whitman
Longfellow
Kipling
Sandburg
Hughes
Cummings
Carroll
Stevenson
Notify the teacher of your 1st
choice. Since no two groups may study the same poet, you may have to
study your 2nd or 3rd choice.
3. Responsibilities/Requirements
You and your partner will create a web page detailing the following
information and either present it to the class or create an historical
role-play.
-
Every group must create a web page; however, each group can decide to
either present the information to the class as an oral presentation or as
an an historical role-play with one person as an interviewer and the other
as your chosen poet. Regardless of the type of presentation your
group selects, the requirements that follow must be met.
Poet
(Research and analyze the following
information about the poet
you have been assigned).
* Basic
biographical information
* Influences -
determine who and/or what influenced his/her
writing
* Primary topics
and/or themes on which this poet chose to
write
- Why did he/she write about those topics and/or themes?
* Include a
picture of your poet on your web page. You will
be able to download one from one of the websites listed
below.
Poetry/Poems
* Find 5 or 6 poems that
represent the poet's overall style and
influences. List the poems.
* Read the poems at least
three times to fully understand
them.
- Look up
words or phrases you do not understand.
- Discuss
with your partner and analyze and write about the
meaning of each poem.
- Discuss the
main topics and themes of these poems and
the attitude of the poet toward these topics.
(What language does the poet use to tell you this).
* Analyze one of the poems
line-by-line in order to understand
the meaning of each poem. Note the figurative language,
symbolism, alliterations, etc. used to portray this meaning.
- You can find information on the poets and poems in books
found on the Internet, classroom library, and the
school
library. Be sure to cite
your sources!
