Introduction

It is so important to introduce careers to students at the middle school level.  This introduction was created to grab their attention and help them to focus on their future.

Learners

This information is designed for 6th grade students in a guidance class.  It could easily be adapted for 7th and 8th grade students.

Standards

Academic Development Standard

  1. Students will acquire the attitudes, knowledge, and skills that contribute to effective learning in school and across the life span.
  2. Students will complete school with the academic preparation essential to choose from a wide range of substantial postsecondary options, including college.
  3. Students will understand the relationship of academics to the world of work.

Career Development Standard

  1. Students will acquire the skills to investigate the world of work in relation to knowledge of self and to make informed career decisions.
  2. Students will employ strategies to achieve future career success and satisfaction.
  3. Students will understand the relationship between personal qualities, education and training, and the world of work.

Personal/Social Development Standard

  1. Students will make decisions, set goals, and take necessary action to achieve these goals.

Process

The process represents a creative way to implement  all three Guidance Standards into the classroom.

The best way students can learn about careers is to take several inventories to get them excited about what they are learning.  We use the COIN book as one of our textbooks for the class.  There are also several on-line inventories that students may take.  E-Choices and Princeton Review have very thorough interest inventories.  The websites are  http://www.echoices.com.   and http://www.princetonreview.com.  If your school does not have rights to this site, ask someone in your technology department.
