Process:
Role: Principal Problem: Your school looks like a garbage dump. Papers, wrappers, and trash litter the halls. The cafeteria is a disaster. Students throw napkins, wrappers, and milk cartons on the floor rather than taking their trash and trays to the lunch ladies. Classrooms aren't much better off. Even though gum is not allowed in school it is stuck to the bottom of all the desks. Bellow students desks look like mini trash cans. No one seems to bother throwing away old papers. They just shove them under their sets and leave it for the next kid to deal with.
Task: You will read articles about the Character counts program. This program has been very successful in several schools. Research the following websites to learn how the program can help your school. Once you have researched the websites you will attempt to solve the messy school problem using each pillar of character as a guide. Six Pillars of Character -
Develop a Power Point presentation using the 6 Pillars of Character. This Power Point will be shown to the teachers and students of your school. It will explain how each pillar can help clean up your messy school. Remember no one knows anything about this program. As principal you must convince the teachers and students that this will be a great thing for your school. Remember - be creative! Good Luck! Role 2: Teacher Problem: You are an 8th grade teacher with some major problems. Your students don't turn in their homework. You see 142 different students over the course of the day in you Social Studies classes. Only 53 of the students turn in their homework every time and assignment is due. Many kids are getting D's and F's in your class. Your principal and students parents want to know what is going on. You want your students to succeed and learn in your classes. Obviously, something isn't working. Your principal recently gave you some websites to research on the Character Counts Program. After researching the program you are excited to try some new strategies to motivate your students. Task: Use your newfound information about the Character Counts program to develop a Power Point presentation to show your students and their parents about how this program will help the students succeed. Six Pillars of Character
Great! You are ready to make a great Power Point presentation. Remember to be creative. Your students and their parents have never heard of this program. Explain it thoroughly and clearly. Research: http://www.charactercounts.org/ http://www.dist57.org/curric/ccounts.html
Role 3: Student Problem: You and 3 of your friends have been elected to be the new class officers of your 8th grade class. With this responsibility you are to be positive role models for the rest of your class and school. Your first concern is that there are several bullies in your school. It is not uncommon for students to be verbally and physically "picked" on while at school. Much of this bullying is being committed by your fellow 8th grade peers. They pick on the 7th and 8th graders. You know this is wrong and must stop. The four of you have been given some websites to research by your 8th grade class sponsor (who happens to be your Social Studies teacher). The websites are about a program called Character Counts. You really think this program could help your school. Six Pillars of Character
You have asked the Principal if you can present a Power Point presentation to the entire school (students and teachers). You want to explain what the Character Counts program is and how it can cut down on the bullying in your school. Remember to be creative while making your power point. Good Luck!
